Wheeler Dealers from Waitrose
Waitrose is returning to old fashioned delivery methods in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and ease traffic congestion around its branches.
The Bury St Edmunds branch has become the first supermarket in the country to introduce ‘eco handcarts’ for deliveries. The move will also help boost the number of delivery slots available to customers, without increasing the number of vans on the road. The specially designed eco-cart will be used by employees to deliver to customers’ homes within a mile of the branch and can keep products frozen and chilled for up to two hours.
Waitrose branches in Lichfield, Parkstone and Droitwich have also introduced electric eco-bicycles to make deliveries to those who live within 15 miles of the branch.
Happy shoppers - favourite supermarket survey
Over 36,000 people took part in a recent online survey run by BBC Watchdog on what people think about the major supermarkets.
Waitrose was named as the Favourite Supermarket, with an impressive 85 per cent of shoppers saying they were ‘very satisfied’ with the store. Asda was perceived to be the best for value, with its closest competitor, Tesco, trailing miles behind.
Marks and Spencer stood out on quality with 35 per cent of the votes, although only two per cent said they shopped there most frequently. Out of the big four, Sainsbury’s received almost twice as many votes for quality.
FSA report on consumer attitudes to food safety
The Food Standards Agency surveyed over 2,000 consumers on changing attitudes to food safety, as well as their trust in the FSA itself.
Overall the confidence level increased from 61% to 64% and the level of confidence in the FSA was the highest since the survey began in 2001. Sixty per cent of the respondents felt confident that enough was being done by organisations to protect health.
