The Sports Issue
Hello and welcome to the Sports issue…
The link between sport, endurance and food is long established. From Shackleton and Scott taking the first tinned food to the Arctic, to Sir Chris Bonnington almost becoming known as “Bovril Bonnington”, there is no escaping the bond.
Sports science and nutrition has come a long way from a plastic bag of orange halves and some tepid water, except at Combe Down Rugby Club, where it would be considered a magnificent treat.
Some glorious traditions still hang on in defiance. Cricket must surely be the only sport where everyone stops midway through the afternoon to eat cake?
Yet some traditions have died in the name of progress. To my horror, some professional rugby players recently they told me that they rarely drank and had their body mass index measured by the club every week to make sure they had “not eaten a pie”.
In this issue we'll take a look at the controversial relationship between food companies and sporting events, interview a Hutchinson Interim with an impressive sporting background and re-cover the life of Tony O’Reilly, our food industry hero who had some serious sporting success. Finally I will guide you through the Cricket Tea.
In between all this, we’ll look at some serious issues such as current rates, and industry expert Gary Newbury will talk us through the state of the Interim market.
We hope you enjoy the issue. We’d love to hear what you think , so do get in touch with any feedback.
